Sterling Cemetery - Deep River Township

Location

Sterling Cemetery is located in Section 18 of Deep River Township. To visit Sterling Cemetery: Travel M-76 north west from the Village of Sterling to Melita Road. Turn north on Melita Road and travel approximately 3/10 mile, the cemetery is nestled in a wooded area and is not visible from the road. Do not miss the older graves which are on the hillside facing M-76 on the West side of the cemetery.

History

Graves date from the late 1870’s. Information from multiple sources indicates that graves in the old section on the hill were disturbed many years ago when M-76 was paved. It has been said that there may be burials on the other side of M-76.

Resident/Property Owner  – $150
Non-Resident/Property Owner – $750
Maximum of 4 lots sold to a household

Lots must be purchased or transferred through the Deep River Township Clerk at (989) 239-4964.

Rules and Regulations

No stone or woodchips of any type placed on the grave site or treated lumber around lots.

No planting of trees, shrubs, or bushes on grave sites.

All existing trees, shrubs or bushes interfering with the upkeep of the Cemetery shall be removed or trimmed as required.

All lots that are sold or transferred by the original owner shall be registered with the Deep River Township Clerk.

Minimal outside containers shall be required for all in ground burials.

All winter flowers and grave blankets shall be removed by April 1st .

For record keeping purposes, township clerk must be notified when cremains are interred.

All cemetery burial certificates are not transferrable.

Polish National Cemetery - Deep River Township

Location

The Polish National Cemetery is located in Section 27 of Deep River Township. To visit the cemetery: Travel M-76 northwest from the town of Standish approximately 1 1/2 miles. Turn off of M-76 to the east (right) onto Wyatt Road. Travel Wyatt Road for 2/3 of a mile or until you reach Augustine Road. Turn north (left) onto Augustine Road. The Polish National Cemetery will be just to your left approximately 1/10 mile on Augustine Road. The Polish National Church is no longer in existence. The church was recently renovated into a private residence.

Graves date from the 1910’s.
